What's a Medical Abortion?

A medical abortion is a safe and effective way to terminate an early pregnancy using medication.

A medical abortion uses 2 different medications that are taken over 2 days. Step 1 (mifepristone) blocks the hormone progesterone needed to sustain pregnancy. Step 2 (misoprostol) causes the uterus to contract to expel the pregnancy tissue.

This method is safe to use up to 9 weeks (63 days) of pregnancy.

Medical abortion has a very low risk of complications (less than 1%). There's no evidence that it affects future fertility or pregnancy outcomes, and research shows no link to long-term health conditions or negative mental health impacts. Millions of people worldwide use this medication safely each year.

Is it safe?

Medical abortion up to 9 weeks is highly effective (98–99%) and very safe. Serious complications are extremely rare (less than 1%), and common effects include bleeding and cramping, similar to a heavy period. Medical abortion is safer than many common procedures, such as wisdom tooth or tonsil removal, and does not affect future fertility. Most people return to normal activities within 24–48 hours.

It’s straightforward: complete a virtual eligibility assessment, have two telehealth consultations, and receive your medications by post within days. This process is supported by international research and guidelines as safe, effective, and convenient.

Our care is for everyone who needs abortion access. While we sometimes reference 'women' when discussing healthcare barriers and inequality, we recognise that not everyone who needs abortion care identifies as female. At Aunty Jane, we welcome and affirm all gender identities. Our services are available to anyone who needs abortion care, regardless of how you identify.

Standing on the shoulders of the Jane Collective and all the courageous healthcare providers who came before us - continuing their legacy of compassionate, accessible and safe care.

We look forward to hearing from you!
